It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

When a matched pair of microphones are used to record a stereo image, the mics may be placed parallel to each other some distance apart. When this is done using two omnidirectional mics it's known as an A-B pattern. However, this approach is often not the best practice.

I first started working on plays about ten years ago at the National Theatre on London’s South Bank. The first show I worked on that made an impression on me was Pillars of the Community, Sound Designer Ian Dickinson. The preshow soundscape was set in a dockyard, and it sounded good. (I have done a lot of dockyards since and they are always based on it) I remember thinking how realistic it sounded, and it opened up to me how much fun that side of Sound Design could be.

The colour palette is a subtle way to visually enhance the emotional aspect of a film. Understanding the basic components of colour and how the audience responds to it , helps you to create a specific palette for your film. The colour palettes can convey a mood or feeling that stays with the viewer after the film has ended.

Sound pros are artists and authors of the sounds that serve a narrative — and they need to make themselves heard in Hollywood. That was the message of three-time Academy Award-nominated sound designer, editor and mixer Mark Mangini during a keynote at this weekend's Sound for Film conference on the Sony lot.

By Chelsea Taylor A couple of years ago I was in an edit putting the finishing touches on the first episode of a short web series with the producer. While we were waiting for it to export we went discussed the problems we ran into so she could adjust for her next shoot. My suggestions? “Next time get more b-roll of the location, don’t let the talent ramble off topic and watch their eye line after a response.” The producer made these small adjustments and saw the difference it made i...
