It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

We live in a society where sound is omnipresent. A Quiet Place takes us back to the root of solitude but simultaneously experiments with the versatility of sound sonically and atmospherically within the dynamic spectrum. Director John Krasinski (“The Office,” 13 Hours) sought two of the top supervising sound editors in Erik Aadahl and […] The post Masterfully Crafted Sound Within A Quiet Place appeared first on Below the Line.

The article touches on expectations and listener fatigue, considerations regarding the installation environment and how science fiction sounds often don’t translate well into the real world. Many components are used to determine the quality of a film; the screenplay tells the story, the cinematography paints the picture and the editing ties everything together. However, what elevates the film is the musical score. The musical score provides film with an essence, allowing the movie to tell its story in its own unique way.

Silence is unnerving, unnatural, and uncomfortable, which means that it’s the perfect tool for a filmmaker to build atmosphere. Whenever a film becomes suspiciously quiet, the viewer immediately knows that something frightening is about to happen. What will it be–a ghost, a loud noise, or even… nothing? This is especially useful for the horror film–the jump scare soon became the trademark of the genre.

Recently, Sound Devices purchased Audio Limited, a UK manufacturer of wireless microphone systems, and is now offering the A10 wireless audio system. The A10 is a digital-based wireless system with separate transmitter and receiver. It offers a tuning range of 470 to 694 MHz in the U.S., so it's future-proof in terms of the FCC's 600 Bandwith Auction, which sold parts of the 600 MHz band to cellular and cable companies.

Flex Pitch has lots of uses. Although it’s primarily designed for tuning vocals, I often like using it as a quick and dirty scratch pad to experiment with vocal harmony parts.
