It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Every once in a while you run across a voice that resonates. I’m not talking about a great singer but the voice of a great thinker. Michael Cioni of Lightiron and Panavision is one of those voices. For over a decade he has been branching out, reaching out and grasping at the big ideas that everyone else has been desperately trying to follow. It is a pleasure to be able to get an hour of his time and chat with him about our business, our tools, and the future.

Gavin Coetzee – I worked closely with Warren and Nick from W&N studio to bring this piece to life over the last few months. We started with allot of experimenting in 3D, exploring the themes of death and decay, transformation and rebirth. Bjork fell in love with the organic/biological tests we had done early on and we set out to build on this theme.

Since Hugh Jackman doesn’t actually have claws that extend from and retract back into his hand, usually the creation of Wolverine’s signature adamantium claws in the X-Men franchise comes from the prop department. However, for the instances when Wolverine has to jam his claws into somebody, visual effects must be employed to make it look like the mutant has actually stabbed someone rather than just playing pretend.

Lighting for people with glasses can be pretty tricky, whether you’re shooting video or photos. At Wistia, we’ll usually raise our two key lights up as high as possible and angle them slightly away from the camera to minimize glare. Check out the silent video example below to see the difference it can make! A lot of times this will fix the glare problem, but it can also cause other issues. Watch out for harsh shadows on the talent.

You’ve got a character that needs to be desiccated and completely non-human in its position but has to be believably human in the way that it moves. Well, that’s motion capture in a nutshell. – John Berton Jr., ILM visual effects supervisor, The Mummy
