To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell
Aotg.com Founder

We're still digesting Tuesday's sneak peak, and while most everyone is careful to say we have to wait and see the real thing the pro- and anti- camps are already staking out their high-grounds, and will be ready to do battle once the software is released.

NAB 2011: Looking Bullish

It's that time of year. My feet are aching, my back is sore, and I'm feeling extremely rundown from the overall atmosphere of Las Vegas. Yes, you guessed it. It's NAB week. As most of you already know, NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) is the largest electronic media event that covers management and delivery of content across all media platforms (movies, television, Internet, radio, etc.). If you haven't been, it's the behemoth of all trade shows and a camera geek's paradise.

We've sung the praises of FilmmakingWebinars.com before (previously called New Media Webinars) as a great resource for getting training on post-production software from some of the greatest educators in this business (like the recent Larry Jordan led Soundtrack Pro webinar — out of sight!)

Full Resolution Screenshots of Final Cut Pro X

Some have pointed out that many of Final Cut Pro X's much-lauded new features are not really that new. This backlash seems to happen with every Apple product, perhaps out of response to the rapturous reception with which Apple fanboys greet the superlative-laced presentations. In the case of FCP X, the criticism is that FCP X's list of new features (seen on video) have been around for a while in other editing applications (notably Premiere and Vegas).

Video sweetening

Video sweetening is both a science and an art. To my way of thinking, Color correction is objective – evening out shot-to-shot consistency and adjusting for improper levels or color balance. Color grading is subjective – giving a movie, show or commercial a look.

Couldn't make it to NAB this year? You're not alone. Show organizers say attendance is up by 5 percent this year over last, but constricted budgets, barely easing in the first half of 2011, have kept many away. Even if you did make it to the show but need a top-level summary of key production-related product news and workflows, check out our show-floor video reports from Digital Cinema Society's James Mathers.
