It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Rob Mize demonstrates how to create a tornado in After Effects and control all aspects of its appearance and movement. It's all done with Particle World so there are no 3rd party plug-ins required.

A film or TV set employing a tapeless workflow is pretty common. Social Network was filmed on RED MX cameras and just won an Oscar. Tons of TV shows incorporate digital technologies like Arri Alexa, Sony’s line of HD Cams or even Canon DSLRs. Almost all web-based projects are made on HVXs or DSLRs. Tape is becoming obsolete but the new digital workflow comes with some caveats.

Vimeo has had HTML5-enabled video for quite some time, which means all of their videos are viewable on iOS devices. But now they've released the official Vimeo iPhone app, which includes far more functionality than you'd expect from a first version. In fact, it looks as if the Vimeo app — which is free — could give the iOS version of iMovie a run for its money (which, it's worth noting, is priced very affordably at 4.99). Here's a look at the Vimeo application in action.

The app has the ability to upload, edit and watch videos by anyone posted on Vimeo. It handles both SD and HD footage and provides you with a touch screen timeline. You can even set In and Out points for edit, as well as insert clips from your library.

Innovation is what I seek every year while I walk the halls of the NAB Show. While I really appreciate the great tools that the major companies continue to bring us, the "innovation" is generally found around the edges and "down the back" of the halls in the 10 x 10 booths populated by the upstarts and... innovators.

In this tutorial Harry Frank demonstrates how to take a regular, run-of-the-mill shot and turn it into something beautiful and moody, straight out of a fairy tale. You'll learn how to set up a down-and-dirty 3D track, add volumetric light and dust to a live action shot, and then finish it with some simulated camera lens blur.

1. Easy Setup - When you use an easy setup (Final Cut Pro>Easy Setup), this creates a new sequence, but it doesn't effect already existing sequences. To change an existing sequence select it in the timeline and go to Sequence-Settings.

Often you need to quickly remove all your transitions or all of one type like a cross dissolve. To remove all your Transitions at once from the Sequence (repeat this if you have different transitions) select the Sequence, then use the shortcut Apple (Command key) + F to bring up the Find window.
