It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

A recent thread at the LAFCPUG website asked folks for opinions on how to use the Final Cut Pro Interface for best use. Well the honest truth is, there is no ONE layout that is the most efficient for FCP. In my case, I use up to a dozen different interfaces depending on the task at hand. I'll literally switch layouts over the course of the day depending on what I'm doing.

If you were wandering around the Twitter world this morning you might have seen discussion of a Wall Street Journal story that listed "video post production services" as one of the top 10 dying industries! But don't be too sad fellow editors, this Business Week article lists editors as one of the Top 10 Careers of 2011! We're damned if we do, damned if we don't.

After perhaps one tsunami video too many, we got to talking seriously about backup and how secure we were. It was a disturbing revelation, particularly for people who live in an earthquake zone where the next big one is expected before I die...

With YouTube now hosting more searches per day than any site save Google (GOOG), the need for film and video editors is clear. The California Labor Dept. expects the field to grow in 2011, as agencies, media firms, corporations, and institutions look to spread their messages via video—so don't limit your search to one sector. This field requires specialized training, of course. It makes a great choice for creative types who want to expand their horizons or for photographers and filmmakers...

A new analysis by research firm IBIS World looks at 10 industries that appear to be dying. The list isn’t exactly shocking, but it represents a mix of sectors that are being left behind by technology or have been hurt by cheaper overseas competition.

One of the booths I'm most excited about hitting at this year's NAB show is the Editshare booth to check out their Lightworks project. Lightworks was an early non-linear editing system that Editshare purchased a couple of years ago and released as a free open-source download.

Avid Bins. They function pretty much like bins in the real world. They hold stuff. Lots and lots of stuff. A hodge podge of stuff where the item you need most invariably settles to the bottom where you are almost assured never to see it again. (Literal bins, not Avid bins – there really isn’t a bottom to an Avid bin.)
