To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

changing FCP filters lengths partially applied

One particularly nice feature that Final Cut Pro allows you to do is to apply a filter to only part of a clip or a sequence nest. I find this particularly useful if I’m applying a non-realtime filter to a longer nest of clips and the filter effect will only happen for a very short time. Though I don’t use it a lot it can come in handy. I don’t want to lose the realtime playback for the entire clip when a small portion will only receive the filter.

The mappable Avid Smart Tool button

Love it or hate it, the Avid Smart Tool that was introduced in Media Composer 5 is here to stay. It will continue to be refined and hopefully evolve as the software evolves but it’s worth noting there is a single, mappable button that can toggle the Smart Tool on and off.

Aja Ki Pro

Last Friday I was to attend and speak at a seminar on Aja, here in Mumbai. It was the start of a weekend, and traffic conditions in the Western suburbs were at an all time disarray. Some said there was a large procession of some kind. Anyway, I got stuck in bumper to bumper traffic, ran out of fuel, and eventually gave up trying to reach the venue.

In this follow-on tutorial to Color Correction 5: Blend Modes, Andrew Devis demonstrates a technique that uses blend modes to help make video look a little more like film and so set your work apart. For almost no effort you can get some great results on individual clips, sequences or even whole projects.

Multi-core processing demands change to computing

To use multicore processors effectively the IT industry needs to radically rethink the basic computer architecture it has used over the past 50 years, a University of Maryland researcher argues in the January edition of the Association for Computing Machinery's flagship Communications publication.

Phyx Stylist is a set of visual effects focused on color overlays. They range from the subtle to the garish, often within the same effect. By altering the color—either to warm, distort, or simply alter your footage—the set creates illusions, digital special effects, and correction.

Change Sequence Timecode in Media Composer 5

February 5, 2011, 11:43 AM

http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/ssimmons/st...

Prior to Avid Media Composer 5.0 if you wanted to change the sequence timecode of an edit you hit the key stroke command + I while in the Record window and up popped a dialog box where that could be changed. Now in 5.0 command + I opens an info window with sequence details. But the ability to change Sequence timecode is still there.

Horses for courses

Frequent forum discussions among editors involve those arguing the relative merits of one favorite editing tool versus another. The reality is that no one tool is ideal for every task. It’s all about picking the right tool for the job – or as the British call it – "horses for courses". Whether you cut news, films, shows or spots - handle your own finishing or farm it out – or just want to deal with the least technical tool available – you’ll want to pick the right editing application...
