It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

As you are probably aware by now, we’re going through our book Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects 5th Edition ("CMG5" for short) and pulling out a few "hidden gems" from each chapter. These will include both essential tips for new users, as well as timesaving gems that experienced users may not be aware existed.

Iain Anderson shows some tricks to add easy slick fx to an edit. Learn how you can use free effects to enhance your video -- first in a way that helps inject energy into an high-impact edit, and then in a more subtle way to change the look of a more serious piece. All the effects discussed here are part of the new CoreMelt Free.

Brian Buongiorno of Tone Visuals has a list of credits as impressive as his repertoire of skills. A colorist by passion, Brian has worked on everything from feature films to television commercials. Parlaying a highly successful career as a Flame op, he decided to take these skills, tap into the newest innovations the production industry had to offer, and deliver an entirely new approach - a new workflow - for color grading. And, make it portable.

When you’re using the View as List setting in a Final Cut Pro bin there are several columns that are labeled as comment columns of some type. All of those comment column headings can be edited and customized (as was discussed during the last 28 Days of Quicktips). I also like to save a column-only template for editing and taking notes.

Facebook in the new grapevine: I learned earlier this week courtesy of CoreMelt’s Facebook news feed that CoreMelt (creators of the Lock & Load stabilizer for FCP, in addition to numerous other effects) was giving away a package of free effects (sorry - Mac only), ranging from transitions ImageFlow animations to footage enhancers (vignette, color correction, light rays, etc.) to several glitch-oriented effects to a nice suite of effects which generate graphics from audio files.

There’s a thumbnail column with the Final Cut Pro browser. Call that column up and you can then scrub the thumbnail right in the Browser column. First you have to be sure you are displaying the Thumbnail column in a FCP browser bin. Right + click on a column heading and choose the Show Thumbnail option:

Converting Media Composer sequences to DVDs without a realtime burner isn’t difficult. But creating a proper DVD with a chapter menu on a Mac still isn’t for the faint of heart. To make the DVD, you’ll export a QT reference movie and burn it with the DVD application of your choice. But adding chapter markers and making a chapter menu takes some alchemy.
