It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Zack Arnold talks about his process. By Ellen Wixted Zack Arnold dreamed of being an editor before he even knew the job existed. As a kid, he and his brother shot short films with a VHS camcorder — but it wasn’t until his brother added music that the process captured his imagination. Continue reading →May 10, 2016

Charlie Austin compares FCP X to other NLE’s from an editors perspective. In addition to describing the “intangible” time saving benefits of working in FCP X vs. others, he also presented some unique benefits of FCP X that are impossible or impractical in other NLE’s. Even if you prefer editing in other NLE’s, Charlie describes some very compelling reasons to add FCP X to your workflow.

The good news is that you really don’t have to run out and buy a UHD TV just yet, but you will want to buy a TV that can display HDR finishing. HDR, an acronym for High Dynamic Range is a process used in post production that delivers a very drastic, visible difference in image quality.

This article would be unnecessary if Apple would simply do the right thing and license its OS X operating system to HP, as I covered in Will the new HP ZBook Studio be the next legal Hackintosh? in November 2015 (link ahead). This article covers motivations to Hackintosh, along with legal and moral/ethical issues and The post Should I Hackintosh? OK — so a lot of assumptions have been made about editing in VR, most of which I think are wrong. Jessica Brillhart discusses a few at some length in one of her medium posts..

I’m going to take you back to May of 2015. After a long journey filming with a prototype 360-stereoscopic rig — a very early predecessor to this one — I found myself in Seattle preparing for an edit. I stared into the familiar void of an empty timeline, but I was suddenly without experience or expertise. There were no books on editing in virtual reality, no one with advice, no theory on how to proceed.
