It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

If the title of this blog post, Thinking of switching to Premiere Pro CS5, got your attention then you might be interested in a new page on Adobe’s website called: Switching to Adobe Premiere Pro CS5. It is from Adobe corporate and it is, of course, Adobe propaganda but it’s a nice one-stop-shop for all things Premiere Pro CS5.

Colorista. It’s one of those indispensable tools for those doing serious Final Cut Pro work. If you’re color correcting and finishing in your FCP box then the built-in 3-Way Color Corrector becomes merely adequate in comparison to the image quality you can crank out of Colorista.

After last week’s look into Avid’s Pan & Zoom effect, this week we check out the Pan & Zoom effect that is included in Boris Continuum Complete 5 and later. It’s a great effect that is incredibly easy to use, and we’ll create a simple zoom in auto-mode (it will literally take you 30 seconds to do) and get into the nitty-gritty for more complex animations.

In our conversation, Chris shares his thoughts on ProRes versus DVCPRO-HD and why he prefers using DVCPRO-HD. Chris gives his take on color correction and color grading. What is the difference between an effect and a technique? Are you a credit-card DP? Chris makes us skirm a bit - but for a good cause. Chris is very generous with shooting and post-production tips for DSLR shooters in this episode.

Anytime you start a complex, long-form project – whether it’s a feature film, documentary, TV show or corporate video – it can seem very overwhelming. With 30, 40, 80, over 100 hours of footage and more – where do you start? The answer is to start at the beginning. Like the response to the old question, "How do you eat an elephant?" – it is best handled "one bite at a time."

On this week’s MacBreak Studio, I host Steve Taylor - an LA-based motion graphics designer who’s tool of choice is After Effects. I thought it would be fun and interesting to compare how After Effects and Motion handle different motion graphics tasks and so this is the first of a series of "share and compare"...

Presentations at SMPTE’s first-ever conference focused exclusively on stereo 3D, held in New York last week, ran the gamut, dealing with everything from camera rigs for stereo acquisition to the effects of video compression and the challenges of transmitting a finished 3D signal. Last week, I ran down the basic content of presentations by Panasonic, which described its new 3D camcorder, and Sony, which outlined a potential suite of post-production tools that may one day address all the...

Part 4 of my interview with Bill Warner. Bill explains how he quit his job at Apollo Computer to pursue his dream of building the AVID Media Composer. A remarkable study in entrepreneurship, he goes on to describe hiring his first engineer, Jeff Bedell, building more prototypes, arranging a demo suite at the NAB Show in April of 1987, and raising the venture capital to get to the next level.
