It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

When FCP hit the world back in 1999 the program was regarded as a video editing application. For those wishing to work with film, and match the negative to the edit produced from within Final Cut, this was a formidable challenge. Those at an Los Angeles based edit facility known as DigitalFilm Tree were pioneers who broke through the wall of expensive post production and made film editing using FCP possible. Ramy Katrib, Founder of DigitalFilm Tree, was instrumental in making this happen.

If one thing wow’d me when I first started editing, it was third party plug-ins that really amazed me, and one package that always seemed to be a given on any editing system was Genarts Sapphire.

I recently acquired a Matrox MXO2 Mini to use on my system. Mainly for use with the new Avid Media Composer 5.0 for monitoring, but I got the MAX version to help speed up H.264 encoding. I do a LOT of that for client approvals. Yes, I still have the big boy, the MXO2.

The last time I remember writing about MPEG-2 encoders was back in 1996, the year the Olympics was held in Atlanta (and what a time that was). But just last week, I got a random call about MPEG-2 encoding for DVD from Emmy Award-winning producer Connie Simmons. By way of background, Simmons produced a PBS Series entitled Landscapes through Time with David Dunlop, which began airing nationally in June 2008.

When I ask you who the main NLE players are, most people mention Media Composer and Final Cut Pro right off the bat, with Premiere Pro and Vegas taking up the rear, and in the last few years, I think that Avid has really taken a beating from Final Cut Pro. Not to say that Final Cut Pro has taken the lead in the non-linear editing world, but Final Cut Pro has made real in-roads and has grabbed Avid’s coattails, and held on strong.
