To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

A potential problem with creating a vignette to focus the viewer’s attention on an area of the frame: What if the camera wasn’t locked down, and instead moves a bit, causing your focal point to wander around inside your vignette? Or what if your focal point wanders a bit themselves? One answer is to stabilize the footage so that your focal point stays still, and therefore nicely framed. That’s what we demonstrate in the final “chapter” of the Extended Vignette Techniques course.

Editing Marriage Story for a balance

In editing “Marriage Story,” Jennifer Lame wanted to stick to the structure of Noah Baumbach‘s script, which she recalls was “very even keeled” and “not weighted towards one character or the other.” Lame spoke extensively about her work on the acclaimed domestic drama in a new behind-the-scenes featurette, “Making the Cut.” Watch the exclusive video featurette above.

I find it hard to believe that I’ve been putting this little list together for 10 years. As other websites continue to rip it off and just list the usual suspects of the same obvious gift choices every year. I still try to find some unique, useful and fun things; many of them I have actually used. So enjoy this year’s list or take a look back: 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017,  and 2018. Just beware some of the oldest lists will have products that are out of date but they are ...

“I’ll be back,” has turned out to be more than simply an iconic movie line. Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and the T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) are indeed back to save humanity from a dystopian future in this latest installment of the Terminator franchise. James Cameron is back on board, as well, with writing and producing credits. […]
