To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Tut: Animated Season’s Greeting

As the holidays are upon us, you may be dropping a gear or two in terms of workload, and perhaps now would be a good time to spend five minutes having a look at one of the applications that you get access to as a Creative Cloud subscriber: Edge Animate. I love this application, it’s friendly enough for the code-wary to use with point-and-click functionality but is deep enough for developers to add in libraries and as much code as they can spit out. The end product of Edge Animate is stan...

In addition to the original Padcaster for the full-sized iPad, they've developed a solid, smaller variation for the iPad Mini, plus a host of other accessories to make this ingenious design even more attractive in production - more than just a frame to hold while shooting video and time-lapse shots.

Christmas is almost here so I’m doing a quiet podcast of questions and answers from the community. Reynante is on holidays (lazy) so it will be just me. In this podcast I explain the good and bad of Christmas, why you should never buy a push powered lawnmower, my new cat (that acts like a loyal dog) and a bird out my window that sounds like R2D2.

About six months ago, I had a 20 Terabyte problem. I had a shelf of external hard drives of all shapes, sizes, and interfaces, and weak, infrequent backup system. It was time to consolidate my media and fix this issue. After much research, I invested in a Areca Thunderbolt RAID and a reliable backup solution. Here are my adventures in building this complete system.

This year the field of computer animation passed a milestone when Pixar’s Sharon Calahan became the first director of photography whose work has been purely on computer-generated movies to be invited to join the American Society of Cinematographers. Calahan has received director of photography credits since 1998’s A Bug’s Life, and she’s still one of very few working in animation with that title.
