It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

I recently finished a TV movie that was shot on Red and Canon 5D, cut in Media Composer 5, conformed in Smoke, and timed from the original raw R3D files in Lustre. None of that is particularly unusual these days (though timing from the R3Ds is still rare in television). But there seem to be a whole lot of people who are confused about these processes. If you’re among them, then maybe the following will help you make sense of it.

The Hollywood Post Alliance Awards are growing up. The 2010 awards marked the fifth anniversary of the event. Not only has HPA expanded its sponsors—Avid sponsored the HPA Award for Outstanding Editing and NAB Show and HP have also joined the fold—but the event moved to the ballroom at the Skirball Museum in Los Angeles to accommodate the growing number of post-production people who want to attend the event.

Avid is self-aware. And while not in the Skynet sort of way, Avid is aware of it’s own. Commonly this is found in a shared user environment (Unity, ISIS). However, it can also be found in terms of raw media. A little known feature within Avid is the concept of a Fast Import. This complicated term does exactly what is says – it imports media into your Avid faster than a traditional import.

Animal Kingdom, Balibo, Beneath Hill 60, Coffin Rock - some editors have been doing beautiful work. Add to that the television nominations, and the documentaries, and you have the nitty gritty of a record number of entries.

Time for some humor. But first, a pop quiz. Where did the term B-roll come from?

A funny thing happened on the way to this episode of Final Cut Pro Insider. As you may recall, the last episode detailed the results of an extensive visit to iTunes, where I downloaded and analyzed about 50 files, and presented strategies for producing podcasts for the increasingly diverse range of iDevices. This episode was going to cover device presets in Apple Compressor, Sorenson Media Squeeze, and Telestream Episode. I hope this doesn't cause any riots in the heartland, but I'm going to...
