To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Avid Now Losing Money Faster

February 26, 2014, 05:53 AM

Restructuring efforts at Avid maker Pro Tools seem to have accelerated losses, not slowed them. Financial site The Street reports today on the state of the company’s stock. Most troubling, yesterday Avid received a letter from NASDAQ delisting the company from the stock exchange. As of today, trading of AVID was halted on NASDAQ. (This doesn’t mean you can’t still trade AVID stock; you have to do it via the Over-the-Counter market.)

The importance of freelance money management

Although I absolutely love being a freelancer, and really have very little to complain about, I never imagined that one of the skillsets I would need to cultivate would be that of a money manager. Don't get me wrong, I have more than enough work, and a rate that has always left me with enough to pay the bills, as well as give my family a bit extra. But recently, I found myself in a situation where a hiccup in circumstances threw my finances for a loop and put us in a bit of peril.

Story is King

In editing, the software is the tool, but the magic happens in the storytelling. It doesn’t matter what level of production you are at. From a home movie to a feature film, story is KING. You may “just” make corporate or wedding videos but if you can tell an engaging story while doing so you can create something people can really connect to. I’d much rather watch a 3 minute short film on Youtube, with an excellent story, that was edited with iMovie, then a 2 hour feature edited with Avid...

HEVC is the most interesting and cutting-edge topic in the world of digital video compression right now. Around 20 years ago video compression was something of a novelty; today it is ubiquitous. From TVs to cell phones and camcorders to PCs, most consumer electronic devices rely on video compression.

On Sunday we had a well-attended pre-rally BBQ to help prepare for the March in March. Some wanted to help make signs and by the end of the day they created works of art.   Artwork by Jesse Toves So given that a reader suggested I put up a post for people to discuss good…
