It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

About three years ago, on a whim, I adopted a 6 month old kitten. I had dealt with cats before at friends’ and family’s houses, but had never owned one, and Luna (short for “Lunatic”) was full of surprises. After her initial “moving in” period, in which she hid under the bed for nearly a week, I discovered that Luna was an exceedingly outspoken individual that needed to make sure everyone knew that she was here and ready to conquer the world (or at least the apartment)...

How do you make something, a little bit better? That is one of the things that Adam Epstein has taken away from his time on America’s long running Saturday Night Live Sketch Comedy show. In this discussion we cover everything from how to incorporate last minute notes on a 2 minute comedy sketch to how to map your keyboard shortcuts. Adam steps thru his “6 Pieces of Advice for Editors and Other Creative People” with us and gives us a more in depth examination of the article.

Honestly, I get a lot of my jobs through people I’ve previously worked with (i.e. AEs, post supes, story producers, etc.) or a contact through my friends. It’s almost always a “You’re looking for a gig, right? I know so-and-so and s/he is looking for an AE”.

Here’s a small tip I’d like to share with the community. I’m a sound editor in post-production, and all day long I need to temporarily mark a certain location in my timeline and jump back to it very quickly, to spot a sound for example. To do so I use Memory Location 999 which is very quick to set and recall. 3 adjacent keys on the numpad do the trick and make it very easy : zero, dot and enter.

Autodesk Flame is a high end 3D visual effects, advanced graphics, and 3D compositing application that is out of the price range of most beginners (in the high five figures!). To make matters worse, you can’t even download a trial version to learn it.
