To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell
Aotg.com Founder

The beginning of a new year is always a great time to reflect back on where we’ve been and make some predictions on where we’re headed.   In this case, I’m talking about Post Production since that is the heart of what I’ve done my entire career.    From my perspective, here’s where I see […]

So just how good are the dual GPUs in the new Mac Pro? We asked audio visual performer Jim Warrier to take them to their limits by running visual performance benchmark apps. The faster they go, the faster FCPX and Motion will go too.

Rumbling Under the Radar

Last year we revamped our voiceover recording chain, replacing a microphone and “voice channel” (a microphone preamp with additional signal processing) that were both dying. Both replacements - a KEL Song Sparrow large-diaphragm condenser microphone and Presonus VXP voice channel - are excellent tools in isolation. However, we overlooked something in their combination that has come back to bite us. Please learn from our mistakes...

A year in review, limited to Instagrams. They’re interesting because they usually capture a feeling more than an event. For me, anyhow. This was my last year, in square cropped filtered phone pictures.

2013 saw a number of announcements and updates from the biggest names in the industry, but really that’s the case every year. Specifically, NLE systems saw a huge amount of love as the big three (Adobe, Avid and Apple) all updated their software while Adobe completely changed...

Among the many incredible digital creatures and environments in Peter Jackson’s second Hobbit film, one that stands out is, of course, Smaug. Brought to life by the artists at Weta Digital, the dragon features the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch, whose performance was also referenced heavily for the final animation. We explore the creation of Smaug with key members of Weta Digital’s team.

When Cinesite wanted to spruik their animation capabilities and add to the studio’s already impressive showreel, they decided to push forward on a short film.
