It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

I finally registered for a Super 8 filmmaking workshop. Yes, you read correctly. In the digital age we live in, Super 8 may not be as convenient and often thought of as what old or long deceased relatives used, but it sure is pretty and in certain emerging, growing subcultures it's also alive and well...

iZotope is well known for its great audio processing tools and plug-ins, but has started to also develop its own software instruments. It is perhaps not a great surprise, given the company’s evident expertise in the DSP world, that its first dedicated synth would not be an emulation of something old but a new take on resynthesis.

Following on my March two-part series "Digitally yours forever: Where and how is preservation going?" here's a view into print vs. digital projection. Smaller, positive carbon rod (left) sparks larger negative carbon rod (right) to create burning arc of flame that light up film frames on reel. Historically, of course, movie theatres have projected film...

These are the same template projects that were included on a separate "Contents" or "Extras" disc in the box with previous versions of After Effects, or could be downloaded in a separate "Functional Content" package (that was rather hard to find on our website). We've made them easier to find and download for all After Effects users on the After Effects Exchange.

Andrew Weisblum has edited the past few Wes Anderson films (Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Darjeeling Limited), but also films for Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Black Swan). In fact, his work on Black Swan earned an Oscar nomination last year for Film Editing. We recently spoke about Moonrise Kingdom and I asked how he was able to juggle such completely different film styles.

Rob Mize shows how to create the effect of a sunrise using only After Effects and a background graphic. This project employs techniques using masks, solids, shapes and effects that can be useful for a variety of projects. Whether creating this effect or some other, After Effects is a great way to start the day.
