To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

THE INNOVATIVE INTERPRETATIONS OF JAY RABINOWITZ

Whenever editors begin a film, they enter into completely new territory and must adjust to and understand the director's way of working and thinking. Editor Jay Rabinowitz, A.C.E., has traveled among a particularly diverse group of directors and has been able to immerse himself in their worlds — while showing the courage and ingenuity to surprise them, which is what really sets an editor apart. All of this was in evidence when we discussed and screened some of Rabinowitz's work in December...

There's a joyous moment in director Martin Scorsese's Hugo, opening November 23 from Paramount Pictures, when Sir Ben Kingsley–– portraying the pioneering French filmmaker Georges Melies (1902's A Trip to the Moon)—performs a magical feat onstage to thunderous applause. It's but a brief glimpse into a forgotten past.

One of the most frustrating aspects of the creative side of the film industry is that there's no corporate ladder, per se, no set way to get from A to B.

I have been a broadcast editor for over 20 years. I have edited long form, short form, docs, features, promos, commercials…. you name it. I started editing tape-to-tape. Then as technology developed, I moved in to digital editing with disk recorders in a linear suite, then moved on to non-linear. I have edited with Ampex Ace 25, GVG (Sabre), Lightworks, Premiere Pro Cs5, and my main system is Autodesk Smoke Advanced on Linux, and Smoke for Mac on OSX.

Michael Cioni from Light Iron Digital started work on the new Muppets movie last October and has called it the best looking movie of this year - until The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo comes out that is. He talks about the some of the barriers the movie broke down production wise and how on-set production saved the production money and lots of time.
