To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell
Aotg.com Founder

People immediately dismiss doing effects in Avid's Media Composer, as they think that a compositing application can do a better job. Well, as you will see in this Quick Tip, Media Composer can create some very complex animations very quick, very easy, and in some cases, just as good as After Effects.

When working in Adobe's After Effects, you can get footage from just about anywhere, and in most cases, you don't have the time to figure out what the client gave you, as in most cases, they don't even know. This quick tip will show you how to match your composition to a clip in your project to get you animating in no time flat.

With the 2011 pilot season now completed (network pickup and schedule announcements will happen this week), it seems a fitting time to talk a bit about television pilot season, how it works, how it doesn’t work, how things have changed in the last few years, and how those of us who are involved get through it.

When editing, speed and accuracy are two things that make a great editor. In this Quick Tip, copying effects from one shot to another might be 'common knowledge', but what about having the ability to copy not only effects, but clip attributes as well, and being about to do it in a second. That's a trick that will amaze your clients every time.

What the heck is a "pro" anyway?

Yes, this is probably going to be a rant. I'm just about over hearing that Final Cut Pro X is 'not for pros', as if that had some useful meaning. Guess what folks, that's a totally meaningless sentence and anyone who says it is... Well, let's just say I don't have a high opinion of their thinking processes.

What's Your Workspace?

Everyone has a different type of workspace when it comes to video editing. Some use big, powerful computers with 10 external hard drives. Others have a small computer that barely get’s by. What type of workspace do you have?

Imperceptible Impressions

I am a big fat geek. I know it. I don't mind it. I know this because I get excited by techie things that no one outside a small tiny circle of people could possibly care about, nonetheless comprehend. That doesn't make me exceptional or anything, as much as weird and dorky. Matrox released a Codec to the public that used to be proprietary to their hardware, which is what we edit with at work. I haven't been editing at home for close to 4 years now.

This week a vigilant member of our Final Cut Pro community alerted me to a video on YouTube that he thought might be mine – but wasn't on my site. I clicked the link and went directly to a recently created YouTube channel, that was, in fact, displaying one of my video tutorials as their own.
