To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Editing: The Invisible Hands Behind the Scenes

Films have been edited for over 100 years and the craft has evolved considerably. The best editing is now honored each year by both the American Cinema Editors with their ACE Eddy Awards and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences with the Oscar, but Chris Innis, ACE, Oscar winner for The Hurt Locker, noted that many of the great film editors such as Dede Allen ACE, Alfred Hitchcock’s editor George Tomasini ACE, Robert Wise, ACE, who edited the masterfully constructed Citizen Kane...

Editorial Bliss

Should you edit your own movie? This is a question I think needs to be asked more often. Some of the great directors never edit their own films and others do. Kevin Smith and Robert Rodriguez famously edit their own material, as does James Cameron, but he usually is on a team of editors with him. Steven Spielberg never edits his own films and relies on Michael Kahn as he has for 35 years with only 2 exceptions in his feature film career. Why would you want to work with an editor?

Today, French site HardMac released "intel" regarding the much anticipated new version of FCP. This rumor takes it one step further than previous claims, as it actually is reporting the version as beta testing with both Snow Leopard and Lion. HardMac predicts that the updated version should release sometime in March or April.....which would put it, oh yeah, just in time for NAB 2011.

What is HD?

I recently wrote that the Sony F3 isn’t really HD – it generated quote a lot of discussion both here and elsewhere. A lot of people make the argument that the standards don’t matter or are wrong. Which isn’t a bad point but doesn’t really impact on my assertion that the F3, as it ships, is not suitable for a lot of HD acquisition.

NEW FINAL CUT SUITE RUMORED; iPAD CLIPTOUCH APP

Back in September we asked, "Is Apple Delaying a New Final Cut Studio?" The French rumor site Hardmac reported that the next version of editing software had experience "setbacks" and that, furthermore, engineering talent was being transfered to the iOS department. Now, Hardmac is reporting that a new version of Final Cut Studio "should" come out in March or April. From the site:

Macworld Expo SF 2011, 26-29 January

Shameless promotion time: Register for MWSF2011 using Priority Code AWM17046, and you’ll save $10 on an Expo-only pass ($15 instead of $25), or a 15% discount on any conference package. That’s a better deal than the "2011Deal" offer on the Macworld Expo home page.
