To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

I’m currently bang in the middle of a one of my patented speed edits. Smash through a ridiculous amount of work but do it against the clock. I set myself a time limit for each sequence I have to cut. Some will come in under time, some will come in over but my average speed should be pretty much bang on, but it means being really on it in terms of efficiency in Final Cut. So here’s a video that explains some of the little time-saving commands I use to speed up the process and insure ...

Avid released Media Composer 5 to some big changes and one of those changes that wasn’t so big (but did cause some discussion and frustration amongst longtime users) was exactly how you are able to change the color of clips in a bin.

Conforming Headaches

Steve Cohen on the annoying problems with conforming: The dirty little secret of our new file-based workflows is that despite the many advances we’ve seen, conforming is still a pain in the butt. Why? Because no conforming system can fully conform Avid effects. Sure, cuts and dissolves can be handled easily, but more often than not, effects work has to be painstakingly rebuilt by eye. That seems downright crazy to me — in the wonderful, all-digital, file-based workflow of the future ...

The Need for Speed

Will FireWire die now that USB 3.0 delivers? Most of us don't worry about the time it takes to do a single file transfer, such as reading in a backup file from an attached drive. Running over a standard USB 2.0—a common connection for backup drives—you'll get anywhere from 14MBps to 40MBps transfer speeds.
