It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Modeling to scale in Maya or any 3D application has become increasingly important, not just for proper proportions, but also as an integral part of physical rendering. Building things to proportionate scale is much easier by having an item of reference in your scene.

Wayne Dixon shares his Add-on for Blender, that when installed will add two new camera rigs under the Armature menu for easy access. The add-on will let you create two fully rigged cameras, one as a crane and the other as a dolly rig. Both rigs are inherently similar, although the crane rig will allow you to achieve cinematic crane shots by adjuring the arm height and length of the camera rig.

Debugging tools in After Effects? Not if are seasoned in the way of scripting or writing complex and abstracting expressions, then no… AE’s tools for debugging expressions practically don’t exist. Felt Tips posts a great tutorial showing how you can create your own tools using the source text property of a text layer to find problem areas of After Effects Expressions.

Autodesk’s Steven Roselle offers a look at a few of Maya’s Bonus Tools that are extremely useful for visibility and display information. Interestingly enough, some of these tools go back to 2012, so these are not really new tools in the Bonus Tools suite, which was a surprise to me as a couple of them I have not even heard of.

Nitro4D posts MagicSwitch as another freebie tool for Cinema 4D. MagicSwitch will let you create a toggle for an objects attributes easily, so you can go back and forth between your two object states. A great example is creating and setting a toggle for object resolution. One click will display a low resolution version of the object, and you can snap back to the high resolution version easily.

John Zilka covers the basic of creating joint chains in Autodesk Maya, using the nHair properties for control. Autodesk Maya makes it pretty easy to set up a dynamic joint chain, but it does involve a few steps. First you need to create an Spline IK through the joint chain.

Adrian C. Koutz takes a look at re-creating the stop motion effect that looks like its made out of a cassette tape. This effect mimics the one that can be seen in the Bruno Mars video “Just the way You Are”. Using a range of native After Effects tools, Adrian walks through creating the project making use of reference footage, Photoshop, and the Puppet tools in After Effects.

Quite often if an image is using an alpha channel, to save on additional multiplications during compositing, the color of the image is multiplied by the alpha value. This is what a premultiplied alpha is, and it needs to be treated differently than a regular alpha channel when compositing.
