It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Final Cut Pro, the application with which many of us learned to edit, and launched companies and careers, will no longer open in the newest OS from Apple, High Sierra. Emails went out to users (thanks to Josh Granger for informing us) who currently use FCP-7 that it won't open anymore if you upgrade. While certain older support apps like Cinema Tools haven't opened for several generations of updates, Final Cut has continued to, and there are companies and even TV shows (See House of Cards) that ...

Do you have a set of common, repeating editing tasks that you need to remember for every Final Cut Pro project? Maybe you have a bunch of sticky notes on your monitor? Or a list taped to the wall?

If you’re a working video editor and have managed to stay away from After Effects, you’re probably used to searching through Premiere’s capabilities and experimenting with different ways to create unique effects. Premiere has plenty of in-house effects for editors staying away from the other motion graphic programs. Here are a few effects you might not know are at your fingertips.

Will all Adobe video applications end up as panels in Adobe Premiere? Adobe doesn't see the need to make an application dedicated to the colour grading process any more. Adobe have announced that they are discontinuing their Speedgrade colour grading application: Producing a separate application for color grading was born out of necessity some 35 years ago – it was never a desirable split from a creative perspective. I don’t think audio post people would say the same about pict...

We have file formats and codecs to store 2D video as seen from a single point. Soon we will need ways recording light information in a 3D space, so immersed viewers will be able to move around inside and choose what to look at, and where to look from. In 1994 Apple tried to kick off VR on the Mac using an extension to their QuickTime video framework: QuickTimeVR. As with the Newton personal digital assistant, it was the right idea, wrong time. Today different are companies are hoping...
