It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Following up on our recent posts about the Warp Stabilizer and 3D Camera Tracker, in one of the first updates to After Effects CC Adobe applied some of their advanced tracking technology to the challenge of masking. It’s not uncommon to want to draw a mask around an object in a scene…and then that object [...]Read More...

I have to admit that Avid Media Composer hasn’t been front and center on my editing radar this year as I haven’t used it as much as I have in years past. But it has been great to see a steady stream of Media Composer updates as the year has progressed along. This update takes Media [...]Read More...

2020 will go down in history as a big “What the Fuck?” Year! We’ve all experienced different things, but I don’t think many of us have had positive experiences. But to put things in perspective, we’re given an opportunity for a do-over. We’re all in this situation. When I realize that, it’s a bit more reassuring. How can we leverage things out? How can we turn this around?

Gordon sits down with Marco Capalbo to discuss editing for Werner Herzog and crafting Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds. How does Werner craft the structure, how do they decide what the V/O should be, and more importantly, the prickly topic of the implications of the Voice of God style documentaries?

I never made a decision to become a film editor – or, in any case, I didn’t decide upon it at a young age and follow a single career path. It’s important to say this because too often young people are asked to have a well-defined and realistic life plan, prove their efficiency, and know how to sell themselves.

We had to bid farewell to an awfully large number of talented men and women who worked in the animation and visual effects business in 2020. We honor their memory on these pages and share our gratitude for the many artistic contributions they made to our world. A big thanks to animation veteran, author and educator Tom Sito, who is producing a virtual Afternoon of Remembrance on Saturday, January 30 at noon (PST) to honor these animation luminaries.
