To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Cameron Defends 3D againts Murch/Ebert

Last week, Boxoffice offered an editorial rebuttal to Roger Ebert's publication of a letter from Oscar-winning editor and sound designer Walter Murch about "why 3D doesn't work and never will." On Saturday, James Cameron, executive producer of the new movie Sanctum, said that Murch and Ebert's objections were not only purely subjective to their 3D viewing experience, but largely unfounded scientifically. "I think that argument is 180 degrees going the wrong direction," Cameron told Boxoffice...

In this Premiere Pro tutorial, Andrew Devis demonstrates an invaluable and somewhat hidden tool in Premiere Pro which can speed up your editing significantly through the use of keyboard short-cuts to quickly and efficiently navigate your edit points and trim or edit them with great feedback and control. Although this tool can be used with the mouse, it really comes into its own when used with the keyboard, and so save you a great deal of time and effort.

These days I don’t get much time for real video production and editing, except for a couple of times a year I put my skills to use and produce recital DVDs for the parents of my daughter’s dance studio. I’m just finishing up one of these projects and I’d like to share a few ideas that might help you in your future projects.

changing FCP filters lengths partially applied

One particularly nice feature that Final Cut Pro allows you to do is to apply a filter to only part of a clip or a sequence nest. I find this particularly useful if I’m applying a non-realtime filter to a longer nest of clips and the filter effect will only happen for a very short time. Though I don’t use it a lot it can come in handy. I don’t want to lose the realtime playback for the entire clip when a small portion will only receive the filter.
