It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

When you’re working with high resolution RED media in a high-definition world then one of the advantages of the original 4K image is the ability to reframe shots in post due to the different sizes of the acquired image. You can quite literally create entirely new shots without any softening of the image since the resolution is there. It can be accomplished in RED’s free software Redcine-X though I have to admit it took me a bit of time to figure out how to do it.

For one of three spots it posted for a new Bud Light campaign — Playbook, starring Carl Weathers as a football coach and Bud enthusiast — Asylum created stereo 3D VFX depicting popcorn flying out of a car's dashboard heater vents and a fire effect coming from a grill tucked under the car's hood. The result, "Pimp Your Ride," is a signature Bud Light spot with a difference — it uses depth effects to enhance a tongue-in-cheek atmosphere. Watch the spot below, then read the Q&A with Asylum's....

I often speak will students looking for that first job after film school. They are keen to find out what they should know in order to work as an editor. The reality is that students starting out in post need to know a whole lot more than editing. In fact, just about everything EXCEPT editing. That’s because much of the nuts and bolts post production work for ingest, logging, conversions, etc. is done by people who fill the role of a post production assistant or assistant editor.

With Danny Boyle at the helm, principal photography on the upcoming 127 Hours was anything but routine. The director wanted to shoot the harrowing true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston on location in Utah, using the tiny Silicon Imaging SI-2K cameras he employed on Slumdog Millionaire. That meant building a new digital workflow far from the comforts of Hollywood.
