It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

There's a lot of angry people out there. Final Cut Pro X has disappointed many of the Pro editors and the atmosphere is poisonous. A few positive voices can be heard amongst an ocean of despair. Is the criticism justified - or are many editors simply adverse to change? The coming weeks and months will reveal a great deal.

In case anyone is interested in my take on the release of Final Cut Pro X, here it is. First, let me say this first article is just about the release, and not about the software itself. I promise that henceforth I will focus on the actual FCPX software and forget all the hullabaloo.

Believe it or not, there's a lot more to applying audio FX in Premiere Pro than at first glance may seem the case. For example, you can apply audio FX both to single clips AND to a whole track - which can save you a great deal of time and effort IF you know how to do it! In this short tutorial, Andrew Devis demonstrates how to apply audio FX both to clips and to tracks as well as go through some of the basic settings to get you started - including Pre and Post fader options and presets.

At this point it goes without saying that the new Final Cut Pro X has nothing to do with previous versions, except the name. There are many things that have changed, especially in terms of management: the concept of timeline with several tracks is gone, the magnetic Timeline continually disturbs us, ... (In Spanish)

Patrick Inhofer looks at the color features in Final Cut Pro X, and how they compare to the existing features in Color. His initial take is that it's simple to learn and more powerful than the color correction in Final Cut Pro 7, but it's not more powerful than the color correction in the Color app, and it's using a completely different paradigm to that used in Color and other professional grading apps.

As we transition from Final Cut Pro to another NLE, I'm running a series of tests to determine which NLE will best suit our needs. One concern is whether any of the workflow that we've developed through the years in Final Cut Pro will translate to another NLE. As in the part 1 of Transitioning, we're looking at Adobe Premiere Pro. Do we have to re-train ourselves completely or develop an entirely new workflow to use Premiere? I take a look at the basic layout of the two applications and some of ...
